President Murmu’s Historic African Visit: Strengthening Ties

President Droupadi Murmu is set to embark on a significant state visit to Algeria, Mauritania, and Malawi from October 13 to 19, 2024. This marks the first-ever visit by an Indian head of state to these three African nations, highlighting India’s commitment to enhancing its partnerships on the continent. The visit follows a year after the African Union became a permanent member of the G20 during India’s presidency, reinforcing India’s strategic engagement with Africa.

Schedule and Significance of the Visit

Algeria (October 13-15): President Murmu will begin her trip in Algeria, where she will hold bilateral talks with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and engage with key Algerian dignitaries. She will address the India-Algeria Economic Forum and inaugurate the India Corner at the Hamma Garden, promoting collaboration in areas such as oil and gas, defense, and space.

Mauritania (October 16): The second leg of her visit will take place in Mauritania, coinciding with the country’s presidency of the African Union. President Murmu will meet President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, as well as the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. Her interactions with the Indian community aim to strengthen bilateral relations.

Malawi (October 17-19): In Malawi, at the invitation of President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President Murmu will engage in bilateral meetings, connect with trade leaders, and visit culturally significant sites, reaffirming the strong ties between India and Malawi.
