President Droupadi Murmu is set to embark on a significant state visit to Algeria, Mauritania, and Malawi from October 13 to 19, 2024. This marks the first-ever visit by an Indian head of state to these three African nations, highlighting India’s commitment to enhancing its partnerships on the continent. Algeria (October 13-15): President Murmu will begin her trip in Algeria, where she will hold bilateral talks with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and engage with key Algerian dignitaries. She will address the India-Algeria Economic Forum and inaugurate the India Corner at the Hamma Garden, promoting collaboration in areas such as oil and gas, defense, and space.
Mauritania (October 16): The second leg of her visit will take place in Mauritania, coinciding with the country’s presidency of the African Union. President Murmu will meet President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, as well as the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. Her interactions with the Indian community aim to strengthen bilateral relations.
Malawi (October 17-19): In Malawi, at the invitation of President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President Murmu will engage in bilateral meetings, connect with trade leaders, and visit culturally significant sites, reaffirming the strong ties between India and Malawi.
President Murmu’s visit underscores India’s deep desire to foster relationships with African countries, aligning with the broader vision of strengthening cooperation and partnership with the Global South. This historic trip not only emphasizes the importance of Africa in India’s foreign policy but also reflects a continued commitment to building lasting friendships across the continent.
