QUAD Launches First-Ever At Sea Observer Mission to Boost Maritime Security
In a landmark initiative to promote regional maritime security and operational synergy, the Coast Guards of India, Japan, the United States, and Australia have launched the first-ever ‘QUAD at Sea Ship Observer Mission’. Conducted aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Stratton, the mission includes cross-embarkation of two officers, including women officers, from each QUAD nation. This collaborative effort marks a significant milestone in QUAD maritime cooperation, underscoring a shared commitment to a Free, Open, Inclusive, and Rules-Based Indo-Pacific.
The ‘QUAD at Sea Observer Mission’, launched under the Wilmington Declaration, represents the first formal cross-deck operational cooperation among the coast guards of the QUAD countries—India, the US, Japan, and Australia. The initiative reflects the strategic directives of the QUAD Leaders’ Summit of September 2024, demonstrating their resolve to enhance interoperability, maritime domain awareness, and coordinated regional response mechanisms in the Indo-Pacific.
