There is no official theme is yet announced by the Government of India for Quit India Movement Day in 2026. The event will be dedicated to the commemoration of the sacrifice of freedom fighters and the celebration of the ideals of freedom, unity, democracy and patriotism.

What Is Quit India Movement?

The Quit India Movement, alternatively named Bharat Chhodo Andolan, was a civil disobedience movement organized by the Indian National Congress in the month of August 1942.

The movement occurred in World War II when the British Empire forced India into the war without the agreement of the leaders of India. Political frustration, economic crisis and the failure of constitutional negotiations further escalated the demand for freedom.

In the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee on August 8, 1942, the historic Quit India Resolution was passed by the Congress.

The call to action of “Do or Die” was issued by Mahatma Gandhi thereafter, calling on Indians to fight for their freedom.

The historic session was held in Gowalia Tank Maidan in Bombay, which today is known as August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai.

Why Did the Quit India Movement Take Place?

There were several reasons for the occurrence of the movement.

The first of them was the failure of the Cripps Mission in 1942 when the offer made by the British government failed to meet Indian leaders needs due to the lack of provision of the immediate transfer of power.

India’s participation in the war without consultation with Indian representatives intensified political grievances.

In addition, the wartime inflation and scarcity of economic hardships worsened the mood of the population.

The rapid expansion of Japanese in Asia also changed the strategic conditions. Leaders of India started emphasizing that the time of colonial rule had come to an end and Indians had to decide their fate.

By the year 1942, the demands had gone beyond constitutional reforms, as the Congress had already asked for the immediate end of the colonial rule.

Who Issued the Slogan “Do or Die”?

The famous slogan “Do or Die” was issued by Mahatma Gandhi during the Quit India Movement in 1942. The phrase became a slogan of the movement.

It expressed Gandhi’s willingness to do everything possible to liberate the country and did not stand for the use of violence but rather for the urgency of the liberation struggle.

The slogan helped to mobilize public opinion at the crucial time. Not long after the start of the movement, Gandhi and other Congress leaders were arrested by the British authorities on August 9, 1942.

It is interesting to mention that the phrase “Quit India” is attributed to the Congress leader Yusuf Meherally.

Important Leaders of the Quit India Movement

The main leader of the movement was Mahatma Gandhi, but there were many other freedom fighters who contributed to keeping the movement alive.

Both Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel joined hands with the movement and were some of the top Congress leaders who were detained by the Britishers.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, who was the president of the Congress at that time, played a significant part in passing the Quit India Resolution.

Aruna Asaf Ali became one of the most prominent symbols of resistance when she unfurled the national flag in Gowalia Tank Maidan after the detention of the senior leaders of the Congress.

After the crackdown on the Indians by the Britishers, underground movement also gained prominence. Ram Manohar Lohia, Jayaprakash Narayan and Achyut Patwardhan are some of the leaders who were a part of the underground movement.

One notable personality was Usha Mehta, who ran the secret Congress Radio.

What Happened After the Movement Was Initiated?

The British Government immediately responded to the Quit India movement. On August 9, 1942, Gandhi along with other leading Congress figures were taken into custody.

Since most of the leadership of the Congress had been taken into custody, the movement took on a more decentralized form. Strikes, protests and other forms of resistance occurred in different parts of India.

Youth played an important role in the movement, and women also took part in protests, communication and underground activities. In certain areas, the protesters attacked colonial symbols and disrupted communication systems.

The government’s response involved making arrests, censoring information, and applying pressure. Despite the suppression, the involvement of many people showed the depth of anti-colonial feeling in India.
