The 7th Rashtriya Poshan Maah, celebrated across India in 2024, marks a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing battle against malnutrition. This monthlong campaign, an integral part of India’s mission to eradicate nutritional deficiencies, has brought renewed energy and focus to the national discourse on health and nutrition.
Since its inception in 2018, Poshan Maah has become an annual event of paramount importance. Over the past seven years, six Poshan Maah and Poshan Pakhwada campaigns have been conducted, each building upon the successes of its predecessors. These awareness drives have cumulatively reported over 100 crore nutrition-centric sensitization activities, addressing various themes crucial to India’s nutritional landscape.
One of the primary focuses of this year’s campaign is the Anemia Mukt Bharat initiative. This program employs a 6x6x6 strategy, targeting six age groups with six interventions through six institutional mechanisms. The strategy has shown promising results, with 95% of pregnant women and 65.9% of lactating women receiving 180 Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) tablets as of August 2024, significantly contributing to maternal and child health outcomes.
In the digital age, Poshan Maah 2024 emphasizes the use of tech-driven solutions to enhance nutrition delivery. The POSHAN Tracker, a digital platform, plays a crucial role in monitoring and improving real-time nutrition services for over 10 crore beneficiaries across the country.
The campaign strongly focuses on an Intensified Jan Andolan, or people’s movement, promoting nutrition awareness at the grassroots level. This approach aims to bring nutrition-related information and practices into every household in India.
A significant theme of Poshan Maah 2024 is complementary feeding. This aspect of infant nutrition becomes crucial around the six-month mark when breast milk alone cannot meet an infant’s growing nutritional needs. The campaign emphasizes educating communities about the timing, nutritional quality, quantity, and frequency of complementary feeding to ensure healthy child growth.
The 7th Rashtriya Poshan Maah has witnessed unprecedented engagement across India. With over 9.22 crore activities organized nationwide, the campaign has truly become a people’s movement, involving communities, government agencies, and local bodies in driving nutrition awareness and interventions.
Several states have shown exceptional commitment to the cause, organizing a significant number of activities:
The 7th edition of Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2024 was inaugurated in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, by Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smt. Annpurna Devi and Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel. The event kicked off with a plantation drive named “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (One Tree in Mother’s Name), symbolizing the intrinsic connection between environmental sustainability and nutrition.
