Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026 Begins With Focus on Anganwadis

The 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026, National Nutrition Month, will launch its campaign on 9th September 2026. The theme of this year’s campaign will be “Hamari Anganwadi, Hamari Jimmedari”, which means ‘Our Anganwadi Centers, Our Responsibility’. The campaign will take place all throughout the month of September, and will include emphasis on dietary diversity, protein intake, nutritional hot cooked meals, community responsibility, and early childhood stimulation. This year’s campaign will also witness the completion of 10 years of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY).

What Is Rashtriya Poshan Maah?

Every September, the Rashtriya Poshan Maah campaign takes place in India. It is a national-level platform that aims to raise awareness and bring about behavioral changes related to nutrition, health, and caregiving practices.

In particular, the campaign targets pregnant and lactating women, children, adolescents, and families. Prior campaigns have emphasized maternal nutrition, proper infant and young child feeding, growth monitoring, hygiene, and healthy diet practices.

The Rashtriya Poshan Maah campaign is part of Mission Poshan 2.0.

What is the Theme of Poshan Maah 2026?

Theme of Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026 is “Hamari Anganwadi, Hamari Jimmedari”. This means “Our Anganwadi, Our Responsibility”.

This campaign will make Anganwadi centres the focal point of all efforts related to nutrition, childcare and early childhood development.

In 2026 campaign, there will be five main focuses.

1. Dietary Diversity and Protein Rich Diet

  • Campaign will encourage people to eat balanced diet including cereals and millets, pulses, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, milk and milk products, and eggs.
  • It will involve Poshan Melas, cooking recipes, protein rich foods and produce from Poshan Vatikas.

2. Fresh Hot Cooked Meal

  • Fresh, varied and nutritious Hot Cooked Meals (HCM) will be encouraged through Anganwadi centers under Supplementary Nutrition Programme.
  • Weekly menu rotation, using local ingredients and improving quality and hygiene of meals will be encouraged in states and union territories.
  • Nationwide testing of HCM quality in association with FSSAI will also be encouraged.

3. Community Ownership & Accountability

  • This campaign will enhance the functioning of the Anganwadi Management Committees (AMCs), who have their guidelines issued on June 23, 2026.
  • The AMC’s will assist in involving the communities, monitoring nutrition activities and instilling a sense of accountability at Anganwadi Centres. SNP Menu Boards will also be put up to make the daily menus and beneficiary entitlements clear to everyone.

Nutrition & Early Childhood Development

Theme four deals with the link between nutrition, early stimulation and cognition.

First 1,000 days are especially critical for brain development. The redesigned Home Visit Scheduler, comprising of 34 development milestones for children 0-3 years old, aims to assist Anganwadi Workers in giving structured counseling and follow-ups.

The campaign will also help in referring the developmentally delayed children and increased knowledge about the importance of nutrition in early childhood development.

PMMVY completes 10 years

Apart from Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026, another milestone that will be marked by the event will be completion of ten years of Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY).

PMMVY is a programme to provide maternity benefits with cash incentives for pregnant women in order to support their good nutrition and health practices.

Saturation campaigns will focus on identification of beneficiaries, clearance of pending cases and creating awareness regarding benefits and process of application under PMMVY.

POSHAN Abhiyaan and Mission Poshan 2.0

In March 2018, the government launched POSHAN Abhiyaan as an inter-ministerial mission against malnutrition through convergence and behaviour change.

Under Union Budget 2021-22, interventions were integrated under Mission Poshan 2.0. POSHAN Abhiyaan, Anganwadi Services and the scheme for adolescent girls are brought under one roof.

Overall approach is one that integrates technology-based surveillance with community-led mobilisation called Jan Andolan.

Poshan Tracker and Anganwadi Centres of India

The Poshan Tracker which was launched on March 1, 2021 is the digital platform for tracking the Anganwadi centres and their operations.

India, as of July 31, 2026, had nearly 13.99 lakh Anganwadi Centres, run by around 13.30 lakh Anganwadi workers that covered nearly 8.94 crore beneficiaries.

The total number of beneficiaries was nearly 7.2 crore children aged between six months and six years old, while pregnant women and lactating mothers accounted for nearly 1.1 crore beneficiaries.
