Rathindra Bose Elected Speaker of 18th West Bengal Assembly Unopposed

Rathindra Bose has been elected unopposed as the post of Speaker of 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly. His election to the chair marks historic step as he became the first legislator from North Bengal to occupy the Speaker’s post in the post independence history. In the recent Assembly elections BJP emerged as largest party in mandate and Shri Suvendu Adhikari has been sworn in as Chief Minister of state few days ago.

Who Is Rathindra Bose?

Rathindra Bose elected as new Speaker of the 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly. He became the first person from North Bengal to represent the chair and it marks the historic moment.

He is a BJP legislator and representing the Cooch Behar Dakshin constituency which is important location in North Bengal.

He is chartered accountant by profession and longtime organizational worker and his rise reflects the changing political dynamics in state.

From Chartered Accountant to Constitutional Office

Unlike many the earlier Assembly Speakers who came from the legal or long legislative backgrounds, Rathindra Bose comes from a finance and organizational background.

He is a chartered accountant (CA) by profession, giving him expertise in the administration, financial systems and governance processes.

This makes his appointment important because the Speaker’s office has traditionally often gone to the leaders with legal experience.

His professional background may bring the different administrative approach to Assembly functioning.

Early Political and Organisational Journey

Before entering into the active electoral politics, Bose had a long association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) which helped shape his organizational and political ground.

As many leaders emerging from the cadre-based politics, his rise appears rooted in long term grassroots engagement rather than sudden prominence.

Electoral Victory That Strengthened His Rise

Rathindra Bose represents the Cooch Behar Dakshin Assembly constituency which is an important BJP stronghold in North Bengal.

In the recent Assembly election, he secured the victory by a margin of 23,284 votes and defeated the Trinamool Congress candidate.

This strong electoral performance reinforced the his political standing within the party.

Historic Election as West Bengal Assembly Speaker

He was elected unopposed as Speaker after the opposition All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) chose not to contest the election for Speaker post.

His candidature was proposed by the CM Suvendu Adhikari and pro tem Speaker Tapas Roy conducted the proceedings and elected him via voice vote.

As BJP holds 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, Speaker post election was widely expected.
