RBI Appoints Suman Ray as Executive Director From September 1
Suman Ray has been appointed as an executive director (ED) by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This appointment marks the entry of another experienced central banker at the RBI in one of its top positions and in charge of two important departments of the RBI – Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) and Premises Department. Prior to being appointed as the executive director, Suman Ray was working as a regional director at RBI for the state of Maharashtra.
Ray was officially appointed as the executive director of the RBI on September 1st 2026, after having been promoted from the post of the regional director of RBI for Maharashtra.
As the executive director, he will be responsible for the DICGC and Premises Department.
The appointment is in line with the long-standing experience of Ray in the central bank. He has been working with the RBI for over three decades now.
Before being as the executive director, he has had experience in different functional areas, which has made him exposed to many things in relation to banking and finance systems. The areas of expertise include currency management, financial inclusion, payments and settlements, consumer education and protection, and human resources.
The diverse expertise has covered a wide scope of activities related to the operations of RBI, from currency management to financial inclusion, payments systems, and consumer initiatives.
He has also been secretary to the Western Area Local Board.
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) operates under the guidance of total 21-member Central Board of Directors appointed by the Government of India for a period of four-year term, as per the RBI Act.
This board includes both the official and non-official members, ensuring diverse expertise and representation from various sectors and regions across the country.I
