Roberta Metsola Re-elected as European Parliament President
Roberta Metsola, a prominent Maltese politician, has secured a historic second term as President of the European Parliament, making her the first woman to achieve this feat in the EU assembly’s history. Known for her leadership and advocacy, Metsola garnered significant support from EU politicians, receiving 562 out of 623 votes in her favor.
Roberta Metsola emphasized the need for the European Parliament to assert its leadership role, particularly in supporting Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia. Her visit to Kyiv early in the war underscored her commitment to EU values and solidarity.
During her re-election address, Metsola highlighted priorities such as strengthening the rule of law, advocating for women’s rights including access to safe abortions, and seeking greater legislative powers for the Parliament to initiate EU laws, a role currently held by the European Commission.
Metsola’s re-election marks a continuation of her efforts to elevate the EU Parliament’s profile and restore its integrity following scandals. She has been praised for uniting centrist parties and championing reforms in transparency and accountability.
Looking ahead, Metsola aims to expand the EU by supporting new countries’ accession while maintaining a robust stance on geopolitical challenges and human rights within the European Union. Her presidency is set to influence EU legislative processes and international relations significantly.
