Rohit Sharma Writes History with Most Sixes in ODI Cricket

In a historic moment for world cricket, India’s veteran opener Rohit Sharma became the highest six-hitter in One-Day International (ODI) history, surpassing Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi. The record was achieved on November 30, 2025, during the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi, adding another glittering milestone to Rohit’s illustrious career.

With this, the 38-year-old has cemented his legacy as one of the most destructive and consistent batsmen in limited-overs cricket.

The Record-Breaking Innings

Rohit Sharma entered the match with 349 ODI sixes, needing three more to overtake Afridi, who had held the record with 351 sixes from 398 ODIs played between 1996 and 2015.

  • He equaled the record by hitting two consecutive sixes off South African spinner Prenelan Subrayen in the 15th over.
  • Moments later, he smashed Marco Hansen over deep square leg to register his 352nd six, setting a new world record.
  • Rohit reached this feat while also scoring his 60th ODI half-century, eventually getting out for 57 runs off 50 balls, which included five fours and three sixes.

Statistical Highlights

  • New Record: 352 ODI sixes
  • Previous Record: 351 by Shahid Afridi
  • ODIs Played by Rohit Sharma: 278
  • ODI Innings: 270
  • Career Span: 2007–present
  • ODI Fifties: 60
  • Age: 38 years

Rohit achieved the milestone in 128 fewer matches and significantly fewer innings than Afridi, underlining his remarkable strike rate and efficiency as a power-hitter.

Legacy of Rohit Sharma

Known as the “Hitman” of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma’s career has been defined by,

  • Explosive batting, especially in white-ball formats
  • Record three ODI double centuries, including the highest ever individual ODI score (264)
  • Over 10,000 ODI runs
  • Leadership qualities, having led India to a Champions Trophy title earlier in 2025
  • A batting style combining timing, power, and placement, making him a six-hitting maestro
  • Rohit’s ability to consistently clear boundaries has not only brought India victories but also redefined the role of an opener in modern ODI cricket.

Rohit’s ODI Journey

Rohit made his ODI debut in 2007, but his rise as an opener began in 2013, following which he became a mainstay in India’s top order. Over the years, he has built a reputation for big-match performances and is often hailed as one of India’s greatest-ever white-ball players.

Even after stepping down from regular captaincy, Rohit remains active in ODI cricket and continues to deliver match-winning contributions.
