Saab & HAL Join Forces for Advanced Laser Warning System in India

Swedish defence firm Saab has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to collaborate on the Electronic Warfare Laser Warning System-310 (LWS-310). The agreement, signed on February 13, 2025, focuses on strengthening India’s defence sector by allowing HAL to manufacture the advanced laser warning system domestically. This move aligns with the ‘Make in India’ initiative and aims to enhance self-reliance in critical defence technology.

The primary objective of the MoU is to establish a structured partnership for the production and maintenance of the LWS-310 system in India. Saab will transfer critical maintenance technology to HAL under a Maintenance Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement, ensuring that India gains the necessary skills and infrastructure to support and sustain this advanced electronic warfare system.

The LWS-310 is designed to detect laser-based threats quickly and accurately, allowing combat vehicles to respond effectively. Saab and HAL have a history of collaboration in India’s defence sector. Their partnership dates back to 2005, during the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) program. In 2017, Saab Grintek Defence, a subsidiary of Saab, entered an agreement with HAL’s Avionics Division for technology transfer related to the Integrated Defensive Aids Suite (IDAS) system. This contract, valued at ZAR 112 million (USD 8.5 million), enabled the development of maintenance infrastructure at HAL’s Hyderabad facility and trained personnel to handle the system.

Further strengthening their ties, Saab received orders from HAL in 2013 for the serial production of an integrated electronic warfare self-protection system for India’s Army and Air Force. The deal, worth SEK 216 million (USD 33 million), highlighted India’s trust in Saab’s expertise and HAL’s growing capabilities in defence production.
