Sanjay Singh Becomes New Chief Of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI)

 

In the recently concluded Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections, Sanjay Singh, a prominent figure within the former WFI chief Brij Bhushan’s faction and currently the UP Wrestling Association vice president, clinched victory with an overwhelming 40 votes against Anita Sheoran’s meager seven. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), the governing body for wrestling in the country, is based in New Delhi.

Sanjay Singh’s Leadership Journey

Sanjay Singh, affiliated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and a native of Varanasi, previously held a position on the WFI’s executive council. Since 2019, he has served as the joint secretary of the national federation. Additionally, he holds the position of Vice President in the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association.

Mixed Results for Sheoran’s Panel

While Anita Sheoran‘s panel faced defeat in the presidential race, they managed to secure the crucial post of secretary general. Prem Chand Lochab, a former RSPB secretary, emerged victorious with a 27-19 vote count against Darshan Lal. Additionally, Devender Singh Kadian, aligned with the protesting wrestlers, claimed the senior vice president’s post by defeating I D Nanavati with a 32-15 margin.

About Anita Sheoran

Born on November 24, 1984, Sheoran hails from Dhani Mahu village in Haryana’s Bhiwani district. She achieved a gold medal in the women’s freestyle 67 kg category at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. With numerous medals at the Asian Wrestling Championships and the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships, she has showcased consistent excellence. Presently, Sheoran serves as an inspector in the Haryana Police.

Brij Bhushan Camp’s Dominance

The Brij Bhushan camp showcased its dominance by sweeping all four vice president positions. Jai Prakash (37), Asit Kumar Saha (42), Kartar Singh (44), and N Phoni (38) secured victories for Delhi, West Bengal, Punjab, and Manipur, respectively. Interestingly, the new Madhya Pradesh chief minister, Mohan Yadav, received only five votes in the vice president election, highlighting the overwhelming influence of the Brij Bhushan faction.

Key Treasurer Position Secured

Satyapal Singh Deshwal, representing Uttarakhand and part of the Brij Bhushan camp, emerged as the new treasurer by defeating Jammu and Kashmir’s Dushyant Sharma with a commanding 34-12 vote margin. Notably, all five executive committee members elected also belong to the outgoing chief’s camp.
