Saurav Ghosal Bids Farewell to Professional Squash

Indian squash Player, Saurav Ghosal, the nation’s premier player, has announced his retirement from professional squash. The 37-year-old’s decision marks the end of an illustrious career that spanned over two decades, during which he achieved numerous milestones and brought glory to the country.

A Decorated Career

Saurav Ghosal’s achievements in the world of squash are nothing short of remarkable. He won 12 Professional Squash Association (PSA) titles and multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) and Asian Games. Ghosal etched his name in the history books as the only Indian man to break into the top 10 in the World rankings, a feat he achieved in April 2019 and maintained for six months.

Asian Games Heroics

The nine-time Asian Games medalist played a pivotal role in leading India to gold medals in the teams event at the 2014 and 2022 editions of the Asian Games. His contributions to the sport in India are unparalleled, and his retirement leaves a void that will be difficult to fill.

Final PSA Titles

Ghosal’s final PSA title win came at the Malaysian Open Squash Championships in November 2021, where he defeated Colombia’s Miguel Rodriguez. His final appearance on the PSA World Tour was at the 2024 Windy City Open, where he lost to USA’s Timothy Brownell in the round of 64.

A Decorated Career at Home

Apart from his international success, Ghosal’s dominance on the domestic front was equally impressive. He won 13 national titles and three CWG medals, becoming the first Indian male player to secure a CWG squash medal in a singles competition. He also won the World Doubles Championships gold medal in the mixed event, partnering compatriot Dipika Pallikal Karthik at the 2022 Glasgow competition.

Future Plans

While Ghosal has bid farewell to professional squash, he expressed a desire to continue representing India for a little while longer. “Finally, I hope this is not me saying goodbye altogether from competitive squash. I would like to play for India a little while longer. Hopefully, there is some fight left in me, and I can achieve a bit more for my country,” wrote Ghosal.

A Legacy Etched in Stone

Saurav Ghosal’s retirement marks the end of an era in Indian squash, but his legacy will forever be etched in stone. His achievements have inspired a generation of aspiring squash players, and his contributions to the sport will be remembered for years to come. As he embarks on a new chapter in his life, the Indian squash community extends their heartfelt gratitude and best wishes to this true legend of the game.
