SBI Enhances NRI Account Opening with TAB-Based Digital Onboarding
The State Bank of India (SBI) has introduced a TAB-based end-to-end digital onboarding process for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to streamline the opening of Non-Resident External (NRE) and Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) accounts. This initiative, launched on January 2, 2025, aims to eliminate physical paperwork and expedite account setup through digital document verification.

SBI has integrated e-KYC services into this digital onboarding process. By capturing customers’ fingerprints, the bank verifies identity and address details through the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), enhancing security and accuracy in customer verification.
SBI’s adoption of digital solutions for customer onboarding dates back to 2013 when it launched the Tab Banking service for resident Indian customers. This service allowed bank representatives to visit customers’ residences to complete account opening formalities using tablets.
