Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland Seek Freedom From Westminster

Political leaders from Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have signed a historic memorandum of understanding calling for self-determination and constitutional changes. The document was signed in Cardiff by Scottish First Minister John Swinney, Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth, and Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill. Sinn Fein President Mary Lou McDonald, a prominent political leader in Ireland, was also a party to the agreement. The agreement is indicative of increasing cooperation between the pro-independence movements in the devolved countries of the United Kingdom.

What Is Stated in the Agreement?

The document claims that the three nations are entitled to decide about their future democratically.

The signatories urged the British government to prepare, plan, and implement constitutional changes in each of the jurisdictions, asserting that Westminster should not stop people from deciding about their political future.

The document outlines the political developments in the United Kingdom and the appearance of pro-independence leaders in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Importance of the Pact

This development follows the Plaid Cymru election victory in the Senedd polls in Wales in May, which saw the end of Labour’s continuous rule of the Welsh administration since its inception in 1999.

Consequently, the biggest political parties in all the three devolved governments are now referred to as being pro-independence for the first time.

The pact also calls for increased collaboration among the three nations in matters of the economy and energy resources.

Connection with the European Union

One more noteworthy point about the pact is that it is pro-future where the three nations are part of the European Union.

All the signatories share the vision of the future of their nations being in the EU.

How Did Westminster React?

The British government has dismissed the emphasis on constitutional changes. According to Downing Street, Prime Minister Andy Burnham believes in the UK “with all his heart and is very much concerned with addressing the cost-of-living problem.”

The Conservative Party has also criticized the summit, calling it a “separatist summit” and “a performative photo call.”
