On 16 August 2025, India marks the seventh death anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, one of the most admired leaders in Indian politics. A poet, writer, orator, and statesman, Vajpayee served as the Prime Minister of India three times and was the first non-Congress leader to complete a full term in office. Beyond politics, he is remembered for his humility, poetic heart, and vision of a strong yet inclusive India.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on 25 December 1924 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh into a middle-class Brahmin family. His father was a school teacher, and young Vajpayee excelled in academics, earning a master’s degree in Political Science from DAV College, Kanpur. Even during his student days, he was deeply interested in literature, poetry, and debates, which later shaped his political journey as a charismatic orator.
Vajpayee started his political career with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) in the 1950s. His powerful speeches soon caught national attention, and even Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru once predicted that Vajpayee would become India’s Prime Minister one day.
After the Emergency (1975–77) and the collapse of the Janata Party, Vajpayee, along with L. K. Advani and others, co-founded the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1980, becoming its first president.
He served as Prime Minister in 1996 for 13 days, in 1998–1999 for 13 months, and then from 1999 to 2004 for a full term. His tenure was marked by bold decisions, economic reforms, and efforts to strengthen India’s global standing.
Vajpayee’s tenure was not without challenges. His government faced the Kargil War in 1999, the 2001 Parliament attack, and the tragic 2002 Gujarat riots. Despite these challenges, he is remembered for his calm leadership and commitment to democracy.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away on 16 August 2018 at the age of 93 after a prolonged illness. His death was mourned across India, and he was given a state funeral with full honours. Remembered as a visionary leader, poet, and statesman, Vajpayee’s legacy lives on through projects like the Golden Quadrilateral and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. His birthday, 25 December, is celebrated as Good Governance Day, reflecting his commitment to transparency, development, and democratic values.
