Shailesh Kumar Wins Gold at World Para Athletics Grand Prix 2026

Indian para athlete Shailesh Kumar won a gold medal at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in New Delhi. He was Competing in the men’s high jump T63 category. Which is the reigning world champion secured the top position with a jump of 1.84 metres. Although this mark was lower than his personal best of 1.91 metres. Shailesh expressed the satisfaction with the performance as it marked the beginning of his competitive season. \

Recovering from Injury and Season Opener Performance

Shailesh revealed that he had been dealing with pain in his left knee following his victory at the World Para Athletics Championships last year.

Because of this injury the training plan was designed to carefully restart his competitive season.

He explained that the aim was not to push for record breaking heights immediately but to ensure a safe and steady return to form.

Target Set for the Asian Para Games

The primary goal for Shailesh Kumar this season is the Asian Para Games. In which is considered one of the most important events for Indian para athletes in the current sporting calendar.

His training program has been structured with that specific competition in mind.

To improve his performance further Shailesh has been working on refining his take off technique.

He believes that improving technical elements of his jump will help him surpass his personal best of 1.91 metres.

Lack of Competition in the Event

After winning Gold Shailesh mentioned that the competition lacked intensity due to the absence of three time Paralympic medallist Mariyappan Thangavelu.

He was who withdrew from the event because of fitness issues.

Both athletes train together in Bengaluru, and Shailesh acknowledged that competing against a strong rival like Mariyappan pushes him to perform better.

According to him the presence of strong competitors raises the level of competition and motivates athletes to attempt higher jumps.

Participation at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix

The World Para Athletics Grand Prix in New Delhi has attracted more than 200 Indian athletes.

And it making it one of the largest para athletics events held in the country this year.

This competition is also important for athletes seeking official classification in para sports categories.

International participation has also been notable with 26 athletes from Russia competing in this event.
