Shibu Soren, Former Jharkhand Chief Minister, Passes Away at 81
India has lost one of its most influential tribal leaders and a key architect of Jharkhand’s statehood. Shibu Soren, founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and three-time Chief Minister of Jharkhand, passed away on August 4, 2025, at the age of 81. Popularly known as “Dishom Guru”, Soren’s death marks the end of an era in Jharkhand politics.
The news of his passing was confirmed by his son and current Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who shared an emotional message on X (formerly Twitter), “Respected Dishom Guruji has left us all… I have become ‘shunya’ (zero) today.” This heartfelt tribute reflected not only a personal loss but also the collective grief of the people of Jharkhand.
Shibu Soren had been admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi on June 19, 2025, for kidney-related complications. Around six weeks ago, he suffered a stroke, which further worsened his condition. For the past month, he remained on life support under the care of Dr. A.K. Bhalla, Senior Consultant, Nephrology. On August 4, 2025, at 8:56 am, he was declared dead.
Shibu Soren was more than just a political leader; he was a symbol of tribal identity and pride. He founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and led it for nearly four decades. He was at the forefront of the movement for a separate Jharkhand state, which was eventually carved out of Bihar in 2000. Soren served as Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times and was a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha). His political journey was deeply intertwined with the aspirations of Jharkhand’s tribal population, earning him the title of “Dishom Guru” (leader of the land).
