SLINEX-26: India and Sri Lanka Begin Naval Exercise

India and Sri Lanka are conducting the 13th edition of their annual maritime exercise known as SLINEX-26 from September 17 to 21, 2026 in Visakhapatnam. SLINEX involves interaction between both navies in professional, joint, and operational activities. This exercise will commence with Harbour Phase and then proceed to Sea Phase, which is going to place special emphasis on operational coordination and interoperability. Over the years, SLINEX has become an important platform for fostering maritime cooperation and understanding between Indian and Sri Lanka Navies.

SLINEX-26: Significant Points

This exercise is taking place under the auspices of Eastern Naval Command. Harbor phase started with an opening ceremony and a reception on board the INS Kavaratti for the visiting Sri Lankan crew.

Ships participating are,

• Indian Navy: INS Kavaratti and INS Jyoti
• Sri Lanka Navy: SLNS Sindurala

INS Kavaratti is a home-built ASW Corvette, while INS Jyoti is a Fleet Tanker.

Harbor phase will involve professional interactions, cross-deck visits, exchange of best practices, Yoga, games and culture related activities. Such activities are intended to facilitate closer interactions between personnel of both navies.

What happens in the Sea Phase?

Following the Harbor phase, comes the Sea phase that will emphasize coordination during activities at sea.

The main aim behind such an activity is to enhance the operational synergy between the two navies. Such exercises provide an opportunity for the participants to hone their ability to work together.

Why Is SLINEX-26 Significant?

SLINEX was conceived back in 2005 and has since developed into a well-established platform for maritime cooperation between India and Sri Lanka.

In addition to naval training exercises, SLINEX offers an avenue for both the nations’ military personnel to exchange information and learn operational practices from each other. Routine bilateral training may further improve coordination and comprehension between neighboring maritime forces.

SLINEX-26 also fits into India’s MAHASAGAR initiative, which promotes security, stability, and inclusivity in the maritime domain.
