Snap to Launch Consumer Smart Glasses in 2026 to Rival Meta
Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, has announced that it will launch its first-ever consumer smart glasses in 2026, escalating competition in the wearable augmented reality (AR) market. Named “Specs”, the lightweight smart glasses aim to offer immersive AR experiences, allowing users to interact with their real-world environment using digital overlays. This move positions Snap as a direct competitor to Meta, which has already made significant strides in AR wearables through its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
The announcement was made by Snap CEO Evan Spiegel at the Augmented World Expo 2025, where he revealed the company’s plans to roll out AR glasses for the mass market next year. After over a decade and $3 billion in investment in AR technology, Snap is finally ready to transition from developer-only releases to full consumer availability. This marks a significant shift in the wearable tech landscape, with Snap joining major players like Meta and Google in the race for AR dominance.
