SpaceX Starship Reaches Orbit for First Time, Deploys 26 Starlink Satellites

SpaceX’s Starship made its debut in orbit during its 14th test flight on September 28, 2026, and this is a significant step towards the development of the fully reusable spacecraft. It was successful in placing itself in orbit and launched 26 satellites of the Starlink V3 constellation into orbit. Unfortunately, due to the malfunction of one of the engines during the flight, SpaceX had to cut short the mission, and the spacecraft came back down to Earth after around three hours.

SpaceX intended to launch the first mission in orbit at around 275 km from Earth and make about six orbits. The mission’s key milestones included orbital insertion, release of 26 Starlink V3 satellites, in-space deorbit burn, and controlled re-entry according to the mission plan by the company.

Deployment of 26 Starlink V3 Satellites

One of the most significant milestones in the Flight 14 mission was the deployment of 26 Starlink V3 satellites.

The next-generation satellites are expected to significantly enhance the capabilities of the company’s Starlink broadband network. The deployment of the satellites was one of the key milestones that SpaceX intended to achieve during the first orbital mission of the spacecraft.

Early Termination of Mission Due to Engine Malfunction

The flight did not go according to plan. One of the engines aboard Starship malfunctioned during the course of the mission. Flight controllers pressed on with the mission having ascertained that the spacecraft still had enough capacity for doing so.

Starship successfully went into orbit and released the Starlink payload. However, SpaceX decided to terminate the mission early, being overly cautious. Instead of completing six orbits within almost 10 hours as was the original plan, the spacecraft landed in the Pacific Ocean within about three hours.

The spacecraft flipped over and caught fire on touchdown but the mission had already accomplished its orbital goal.

The Importance of Starship Flight 14

It is important for Starship to conduct its orbital test flight because previous test flights of the vehicle were deliberately flown on suborbital flights. Flight 14 was meant to mark the start of the next stage of the development of the Starship orbital transportation vehicle.

The vehicle is meant to eventually carry satellites, cargos, and even humans farther than Earth orbit.
