Sri Lanka to take over as Chair of Indian Ocean Rim Association

The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) is an intergovernmental organisation of 23 member states and 11 dialogue partners from Africa, West Asia, South Asia, South-East Asia, and Oceania. It was established in 1997 to promote regional cooperation and development.

The IORA Council of Ministers meeting is the highest decision-making body of the Association. It is held annually to discuss and decide on IORA priorities.

Foreign Ministers of 16 countries to attend IORA meeting in Colombo

  • Foreign Ministers of India, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Iran, Malaysia, and South Africa, as well as ministerial and senior-level participation from other member and dialogue partner countries.
  • Sri Lanka to take over as Chair of IORA for the next two years.

  • India to share maritime information on vessels of interest with IORA member states and dialogue partners.
  • This will help to enhance maritime security and cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.

IORA meeting comes in the backdrop of China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean

  • China has been increasing its military and economic presence in the Indian Ocean region in recent years.
  • This has raised concerns among some countries in the region, including India.
  • The IORA meeting provides an opportunity for countries in the region to discuss their concerns and to cooperate on maritime security and other issues.

India and Sri Lanka to launch ferry service connecting Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai

  • India and Sri Lanka to launch a long-pending ferry service connecting Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu with Kankesanthurai in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka.
  • This will help to enhance connectivity between the two countries and to promote trade and tourism.
