Subianto Announces Indonesia’s Largest-Ever Cabinet

Newly inaugurated President Prabowo Subianto has unveiled Indonesia’s largest-ever Cabinet, comprising 109 members. Named the “Red and White Cabinet” after Indonesia’s flag, this lineup reflects his vision of a strong, unified government. Subianto, who was sworn in on Sunday, seeks to unite the nation’s multicultural fabric and diverse political interests. Analysts, however, have noted that the expanded Cabinet might overburden the bureaucracy.

Fat Cabinet for Strong Governance

Subianto’s administration includes ministers, vice ministers, and national agency heads from seven political parties and half of Joko Widodo’s previous Cabinet. This “fat” Cabinet serves as a political reward for Widodo’s tacit support during the election. Subianto defended the large coalition as necessary to create a stable government.

Policy Continuity and Economic Ambitions

Subianto pledged to continue Widodo’s policies, including the multibillion-dollar capital city project. Key figures like Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati were reappointed, ensuring continuity in financial reforms. Subianto aims for an 8% economic growth rate by the end of his term, with an ambitious spending plan covering defense, civil servant salary hikes, and a children’s free meals program.
