Suchika Tariyal Wins Historic MMA Bronze for India At Asian Games 2026

The first ever Indian athlete to clinch an MMA medal at the Asian Games 2026 has been Suchika Tariyal. She achieved this feat at the Aichi-Nagoya Games by winning a bronze medal in the women’s traditional -60kg event. The 36-year-old won the bronze after reaching the semi-finals in the event. Her semi-final run came to an end after she was defeated narrowly by Singapore’s Hui Hoon Teo in the semi-finals. The Indian athlete won her quarter-final bout 2-0 against Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa to reach the semi-finals.

Suchika Tariyal’s Asian Games Medal

Tariyal’s medal is important in MMA history as MMA made its debut as a sport at the Aichi-Nagoya Games 2026.

Tariyal lost narrowly in her semi-final bout against Singapore’s Hui Hoon Teo, who took the bout to overtime. This was enough for the defeat of the Indian athlete and thereby ended her medal run.

However, she managed to secure her country’s first medal in the sport by reaching the semi-finals stage.

Earlier, she won her quarter-final bout against Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa by 2-0.

A Career Spanning Different Combat Sports

In addition to the Asian Games bronze medal, Tariyal has had an impressive career in different combat sports.

She is a national-level judoka and participated in the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, reaching the bronze medal round. Later, she participated in kurash in the 2023 Asian Games.

Subsequently, she found her niche in Jiu-Jitsu and clinched a world championship in fighting Jiu-Jitsu in 2024.

Her experience in different combat sports helped her return to MMA after many years out of action.

MMA Return of Suchika Tariyal

In 2017, Tariyal had a professional debut in MMA and won her very first fight. Subsequently, she left the sport for seven years to focus on judo and Jiu-Jitsu.

She returned to MMA in November 2024 and signed up for a multi-fight contract with BRAVE Combat Federation.

However, she has faced her own share of ups and downs throughout her sports career, one of which included a knee injury. She gained fame among Indians by featuring in the television show Roadies.

MMA Makes First Appearance at Asian Games

There are six sports that will make their first appearance at the Asian Games through Aichi-Nagoya 2026.

The other five sports that will be introduced include,

• Teqball
• Padel
• Surfing
• Virtual taekwondo

The addition of MMA allows athletes involved in combat sports to compete in this multi-sport competition in Asia.

Reason Why Suchika Tariyal’s Bronze Matters

Although Suchika Tariyal did not participate in the finals, it was her bronze that marked her as an individual who has won a medal in MMA at the Asian Games on behalf of India.

With judo, kurash, Jiu-Jitsu and MMA already part of her career, this bronze is a milestone in her career in the world of combat sports.
