Sue Redfern: ICC’s First Female Neutral Umpire In Bilateral Series

In a groundbreaking development for women’s cricket, Sue Redfern from England is set to become the first ICC-appointed female neutral umpire to officiate in a bilateral series. This historic moment is scheduled to take place during the upcoming WT20I between Australia and South Africa, marking a significant step forward for gender inclusivity in cricket officiating.

ICC’s Decision for Neutrality in Umpiring

Redfern’s appointment is a result of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision to have one neutral umpire for all ICC Women’s Championship series and T20I matches associated with them. This move is aimed at ensuring a degree of neutrality in match officiating while also contributing to the long-term development of female umpires in the sport.

Equal Opportunities and Recognition for Female Umpires

Seven female neutral umpires, including Sue Redfern, will officiate across ICC Women’s Championship series. These umpires will receive match-day pay equivalent to those on the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires, highlighting a commitment to providing equal opportunities and recognition for women in cricket officiating.

Redfern’s Perspective and Gratitude

Sue Redfern expressed her gratitude towards the ICC and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for their support over the years. She sees her appointment as a pivotal moment that will contribute to the momentum and growth of female match officials in the sport.

ICC’s Strategic Ambition for Women in Cricket

The ICC emphasizes its commitment to advancing the involvement and visibility of women both on and off the field within the game. Female neutral umpires will be selected based on merit, and the ICC envisions more of them finding their place in the ICC International Panel of Umpires in the coming years.

Redfern’s Cricket Journey and Officiating Experience

Sue Redfern, who represented England in six Tests and 15 ODIs between 1995 and 1999, has been part of the ICC Development Panel of Umpires since 2016. Her officiating experience includes two ICC Women’s Cricket World Cups (2017 and 2022) and three ICC Women’s T20 World Cups (2018, 2022, and 2024).
