Sunil Mittal to Exit Airtel Africa Chair Role – New Leaders Named

Sunil Bharti Mittal has announced he will to step down as Chairman of Airtel Africa in July 2026. The move comes after the nearly seven years of leadership since the company listing in the year 2019. He will be succeeded by Gopal Vittal and who will take over as Non-Executive Chair. While Shravin Bharti Mittal will assume the role of Deputy Chair and will ensuring continuity in leadership of the business.

Mittal has also expressed confidence in the company’s future and leadership strength. Under his leadership the company expanded its operations in across 14 African countries via offering mobile voice, data and mobile money services.

Who is Gopal Vittal? The New Chair of Airtel Africa

Gopal Vittal is a well known name in the telecom industry. He also played instrumental role to transforming Bharti Airtel as the market leader.

His appointment as Non-Executive Chair of Airtel Africa will signals continuity as well as strategic alignment between Indian and African operations.

Vittal currently also serves as the Chair of the GSMA which is the global association representing over 750 mobile operators.

His leadership has been credited with achieving record-high revenue market share for the Bharti Airtel in a highly competitive telecom market.

Role of Shravin Bharti Mittal in the New Structure

As part of the leadership reshuffle structure Shravin Bharti Mittal will also take on the role of Deputy Chair.

This move ensures that the continued involvement of the founding family in strategic decisions.
