The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, organised a distinctive event aimed at showcasing the products and craftsmanship of Divyang entrepreneurs and artisans from across the nation. The event, titled ‘Divya Kala Mela,’ took place in Surat, Gujarat, spanning from December 29, 2023, to January 7, 2024.
The primary objective of the ‘Divya Kala Mela’ is to contribute to the economic empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (PwD)/Divyangjan. This initiative provides a unique platform for marketing and exhibiting the diverse products and skills of Divyang entrepreneurs. The event in Surat marks the 12th in the series that began in 2022, with previous editions held in various cities across India.
Around 100 Divyang artisans, artists, and entrepreneurs from approximately 20 states and Union Territories will participate in the Surat event. The products on display will encompass a wide range of categories, including Home Décor & Lifestyle, Clothing, Stationery and eco-friendly products, packaged food and organic products, Toys & Gifts, and Personal Accessories such as Jewellery and Clutch Bags.
The ‘Divya Kala Mela’ series commenced in Delhi in December 2022, followed by events in Mumbai, Bhopal, Guwahati, Indore, Jaipur, Varanasi, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Patna. Each edition has successfully brought together Divyang entrepreneurs, fostering a spirit of ‘vocal for local’ by promoting products made by individuals with extraordinary determination.
The Surat edition of the ‘Divya Kala Mela’ will present an engaging experience for visitors, featuring vibrant products from various regions of the country, including Jammu and Kashmir, the North Eastern states, and more. The event aims to highlight the resilience and creativity of Divyang artisans, offering attendees the opportunity to witness and purchase exceptional products crafted with extraordinary determination.
The 10-day event in Surat will not only be a platform for commerce but also a cultural extravaganza. Open to the public from 11:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., the ‘Divya Kala Mela’ will feature cultural activities and performances by Divyang artists and well-known professionals. Additionally, visitors can savor regional cuisines from across the country, adding a flavorful touch to the overall experience.
The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities has ambitious plans to expand the reach of ‘Divya Kala Mela.’ As part of this vision, similar events will be organized in other cities across the country during the 2023-2024 period.
