Suryabala's Novel Wins 34th Vyas Samman 2024
Hindi writer Suryabala has been awarded the 34th Vyas Samman 2024 for her novel Kaun Des Ko Vasi: Venu Ki Diary. Published in 2018, the novel delves into cultural conflicts and identity struggles faced by Indian youth in America. Instituted in 1991 by the KK Birla Foundation, the Vyas Samman honors outstanding Hindi literary works from the past decade, offering a cash prize of ₹4 lakh, a citation, and a plaque. The selection committee was chaired by eminent litterateur Prof. Ramji Tiwari.
Born in Varanasi in 1943, Suryabala holds an MA and PhD in Hindi literature from Kashi Vishwavidyalaya. Over her decades-long career, she has penned over 50 novels, biographies, and children’s stories, with several adapted into television serials. Known for centering social issues, her works reflect deep cultural insights.
The novel critically examines the Indian youth’s fascination with America as a land of opportunity, shedding light on cultural dilemmas, ideological conflicts, and the alienation experienced abroad. It portrays the spiritual and cultural detachment of overseas Indians, who struggle to reconnect with their roots while failing to establish new ones. Drawing from her personal experience and observations, Suryabala presents a realistic portrayal of the identity crisis among diaspora communities.
