Swacchotsav 2025 to Celebrate Clean and Green Festivities

The Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2025 campaign is set to return in full force, with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti, launching ‘Swacchotsav’—a fortnight-long celebration of cleanliness and community participation. Scheduled from September 17 to October 2, the campaign aligns with the Indian festive season, encouraging citizens to embrace clean and green celebrations.

Preparatory Meeting and Ministerial Vision

A high-level preparatory meeting was held on September 9, 2025, co-chaired by the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Minister of Jal Shakti. Ministers and officials from states and union territories participated to finalize the roadmap for SHS 2025.

SHS 2025 Theme: “Swacchotsav”

This year’s theme, Swacchotsav, celebrates the fusion of festivities with environmental responsibility. The campaign aims to harness community enthusiasm during festivals to promote,

  • Clean and green celebrations
  • Collective ownership of cleanliness drives
  • Sustainable waste management practices

Campaign Focus Areas

1. Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs)

Cities and villages will identify, map, and act upon CTUs, including key public areas, market spaces, transport hubs, and event venues, ensuring visible cleanliness outcomes.

2. Legacy Dumpsite Elimination

The campaign puts strong emphasis on remediation of legacy waste. States are expected to launch projects to treat 100% of dumpsites, aligning with circular economy principles.

3. SafaiMitra Suraksha Shivir

Dedicated safety and welfare initiatives for sanitation workers will be undertaken during the campaign. The goal is to ensure their well-being, dignity, and safety, reinforcing inclusivity in the sanitation movement.

It reflects the broader Swachh Bharat Mission goal to integrate Swachhata as a lifestyle, not just a seasonal drive.
