Swaraj Kaushal, Former Mizoram Governor Passes Away at 73
Swaraj Kaushal, the former Governor of Mizoram, a noted senior advocate, and the husband of late BJP stalwart Sushma Swaraj, passed away on December 4, 2025, at the age of 73. His death marks the end of a remarkable journey in Indian public life, defined by legal brilliance, political acumen, and unwavering national service.
Swaraj Kaushal reportedly experienced chest pain earlier in the afternoon and was immediately rushed to AIIMS, New Delhi, where he was declared dead by doctors. His cremation is scheduled to be held at the Lodhi Road crematorium.
The news of his death was confirmed by the Delhi BJP in an official statement, expressing deep sorrow over the sudden demise of the former Governor and veteran legal professional.
Swaraj Kaushal’s public life spanned decades, encompassing notable contributions to law, politics, and governance.
He served as the Governor of Mizoram from 1990 to 1993, during a critical phase of the state’s political consolidation following the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord in 1986. His tenure is remembered for fostering dialogue and aiding integration in one of India’s most sensitive border states.
Apart from his political role, Kaushal was a distinguished lawyer, practicing in the Supreme Court of India and renowned for his deep knowledge of constitutional law and civil liberties. His sharp legal mind and principled advocacy earned him respect across party lines.
Kaushal was married to the iconic BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, a former External Affairs Minister of India, who passed away in 2019. Their union was seen as a partnership of shared values, commitment to public life, and devotion to nationalist ideals.
Their daughter, Bansuri Swaraj, currently serves as a BJP MP from New Delhi, carrying forward the family’s legacy in Indian politics.
