Sweden Reports Mpox Clade I; WHO Calls for Global Action
Sweden has confirmed its first case of the mpox Clade I variant, marking the first occurrence of this more dangerous strain outside Africa. The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for enhanced surveillance, data sharing, and international cooperation to manage and control the outbreak.
On Thursday, Sweden’s Health and Social Affairs Minister, Jakob Forssmed, announced the detection of the Clade I variant, a more severe form of mpox that spreads through close contact. This case represents a significant development as it is the first instance of this variant being reported outside the African continent.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the urgency for affected nations to collaborate. He urged for better surveillance, data sharing, and distribution of vaccines to tackle the outbreak effectively. The WHO also highlighted the importance of applying lessons from previous public health emergencies to address the current situation.
The WHO declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, following recent outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This declaration underscores the need for a coordinated international response to curb the spread of the virus.
In related news, Pakistan has reported its first monkeypox case of 2024. A 34-year-old man from Mardan, who recently returned from Saudi Arabia, tested positive for the virus upon developing symptoms. The diagnosis, confirmed by Khyber Medical University in Peshawar, highlights the ongoing global spread of mpox.
