Tata Elxsi & Garuda Aerospace to Boost India's UAV Sector
In a major step towards boosting India’s self-reliance in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, Tata Elxsi and Garuda Aerospace have partnered to establish a Centre of Excellence for drone design, engineering, and certification. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at Aero India 2025, marking a crucial development in India’s UAV sector. The collaboration aligns with the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and aims to develop indigenous drone solutions for defence, agriculture, and smart city applications.
The joint initiative focuses on advancing UAV technology with artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and AI-driven analytics. This will help improve drone performance, reduce energy consumption by 20%, and cut costs by over 20%. A key objective is to create a fully indigenous vendor ecosystem, minimizing reliance on imported drone components. The collaboration also seeks to shorten UAV development cycles by up to six months, accelerating India’s presence in the global UAV market.
Tata Elxsi will lead the design, development, testing, and certification of UAV subsystems, using its expertise in avionics, miniaturization, ground control systems, and secure communication. The company will ensure regulatory compliance with global standards like DO-254 and DO-178C. Additionally, Tata Elxsi will integrate AI-driven autonomous systems, digital twin technologies, and advanced propulsion systems to enhance drone efficiency.
On the other hand, Garuda Aerospace, a key OEM in the UAV sector, will handle business acquisition and operational delivery. The drones developed under this initiative will be used for various applications, including payload management, goods delivery, precision agriculture, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. These innovations are expected to cater to defence and commercial sectors, meeting critical operational demands.
The Indian defence forces and Border Security Force (BSF) are among the primary beneficiaries of this collaboration, as the initiative will provide them with next-generation UAV technology. This partnership is also expected to generate new employment opportunities and contribute to aerospace workforce development. Over the next three to five years, the focus will be on completely indigenized production and the supply of UAVs and related ground systems.
The Tata Elxsi-Garuda Aerospace partnership is a strategic move supporting India’s broader vision of self-reliance in critical technologies. The ‘Make in India’ initiative, launched in 2014, has been instrumental in promoting domestic manufacturing and reducing dependence on foreign imports. The establishment of this Centre of Excellence marks a significant step in advancing indigenous aerospace and defence capabilities.
