Tata–Lockheed Martin to Build New MRO Facility for C-130J Super Hercules in India (1)
In a major boost to India’s defence infrastructure, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Lockheed Martin have commenced construction of a state-of-the-art Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility for the C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. Located in Bengaluru, this facility is poised to enhance the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) operational readiness and create long-term capacity for sustaining one of the world’s most dependable tactical airlifters.
The C-130J Super Hercules is a versatile, four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft used worldwide for tactical airlift missions. Known for its ability to operate from short and unprepared runways, it plays a critical role in,
India currently operates 12 C-130J aircraft, primarily for strategic and tactical missions. Their high-altitude performance has made them valuable in challenging terrains like Ladakh and the northeast.
Tata and Lockheed Martin have had a longstanding partnership. Their joint venture, Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Ltd. (TLMAL), has been manufacturing components such as the empennage (tail assembly) for the global C-130J fleet. In 2025, TLMAL celebrated the delivery of its 250th C-130J tail assembly, underlining the scale of Indian contribution to the global supply chain.
The decision to expand this partnership into the MRO segment comes at a time when Lockheed Martin is pitching the C-130J for a large Indian Air Force tender to procure 80 medium transport aircraft.
The upcoming facility in Bengaluru will be a dedicated centre for the sustainment of C-130J aircraft, both for Indian and regional operators. It will offer,
This will be India’s first dedicated C-130J MRO hub, capable of servicing both domestic and international fleets.
MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) refers to all services required to ensure an aircraft’s airworthiness and operational efficiency. It includes scheduled inspections, unscheduled repairs, component replacements, upgrades, and complete overhauls. MRO facilities are critical to keeping aircraft safe, efficient, and ready for operations.
In the defence sector, a domestic MRO setup reduces logistical delays, enhances strategic autonomy, and enables continuous deployment of key military assets.
