Tavengwa Mukuhlani Appointed ICC Deputy Chairperson Until 2027

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has selected the chairman of Zimbabwe Cricket, Tavengwa Mukuhlani, as the new Deputy Chairperson until November 2027. Mukuhlani, who represents Zimbabwe Cricket at the ICC Board, replaces Imran Khwaja who resigned from the ICC Board. The new appointment is made ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 as African cricket readies itself for the event which will be co-hosted by Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Namibia. This new appointment makes Mukuhlani the first Zimbabwean ICC Deputy Chair.

Who Is Tavengwa Mukuhlani?

Mukuhlani is the chairman of Zimbabwe Cricket and represents the organization at the ICC Board. Mukuhlani has served several roles in different ICC committees.

Currently, he sits on the Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee (F&CA) and the Nominations Committee while heading the HR and Remuneration Committee.

This new tenure as ICC Deputy Chairperson will be effective until November 2027.

Mukuhlani’s Responsibilities Ahead of 2027 World Cup

The appointment takes place just one year ahead of the 2027 Men’s Cricket World Cup to be held in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Namibia.

The 2027 Cricket World Cup is going to see the Cricket World Cup come back to Africa after 24 years. Mukuhlani’s expertise in Zimbabwe cricket governance and knowledge about Africa in general will play an important role in discussions about the upcoming tournament as well as the development of cricket in the region.

The tournament will also serve as another important step in the international expansion of cricket including its return to the Olympics.

What Has Jay Shah Said?

The ICC Chairman Jay Shah extended his congratulations to Mukuhlani upon his appointment and praised his expertise in cricket administration and understanding of the global game.

Shah also emphasized that the appointment was a historic achievement for Zimbabwe as Mukuhlani is the first person from Zimbabwe appointed as ICC Deputy Chair. Strong leadership will be crucial during the expansion of the cricket into different countries and its return to the Olympics.

Mukuhlani felt honored to have the confidence bestowed upon him by the ICC Board Directors and was excited about collaborating with Jay Shah and other members of the Board.

He pointed out the spread of the sport across the world and its comeback in the Olympics as key points for the cricket community. He further said that he would help the ICC in achieving its goals.
