Telangana Government’s Decision to Scrap Hyderabad Pharma City

In a significant move, the Telangana government has opted to discontinue the much-touted Hyderabad Pharma City project, citing legal complexities, farmer protests, and environmental concerns.

Reasons for Scrapping

  • Legal Issues: The decision stems from legal entanglements surrounding the project.
  • Farmer Protests: Ongoing farmer protests have contributed to the government’s decision.
  • Environmental Concerns: Environmental issues have also played a pivotal role in the discontinuation of the project.

Introduction of Pharma Villages

As an alternative strategy, the government plans to establish Pharma Villages to decentralize the growth of the pharmaceutical industry across the state.

Key points include:

  • Promoting Industry Across the State: The aim is to distribute the pharmaceutical industry’s growth evenly.
  • Location and Scale: Initially, 10 Pharma Villages will be established, with three in Nalgonda, Vikarabad, and Medak districts, covering 1,000-2,000 acres each.
  • Consultation with Investors: The government will engage with potential investors to ascertain their land requirements and preferences.

Policy Continuation

Despite discontinuing the Pharma City project, the government reassures its commitment to continuing and enhancing favorable policies for industry development. Key points include:

  • Commitment to Good Policies: The government affirms its dedication to maintaining and improving beneficial policies.
  • Addressing Inefficiencies: Any shortcomings or inefficiencies will be addressed to ensure effective policy implementation.

Expansion of Genome Valley

The government highlights its efforts to expand Genome Valley, a hub for life sciences companies.

  • Land Acquisition: Land acquisition for the expansion of Genome Valley has been completed.
  • Investment Projection: Anticipated investments of ₹22,000-30,000 crore in the second phase of expansion demonstrate confidence in the project’s growth potential.
