Top-10 Most Powerful Missiles in the World, Know the Names

Missiles are strong weapons made by many countries for defense and safety. Some missiles can travel very far, carry nuclear bombs and hit targets with great accuracy. They are a big part of a country’s military power. In this article, we will look at the top-10 most powerful missiles in the world that are known for their long range, high speed and great destructive power.

World’s Most Powerful Missile – RS-28 Sarmat

The RS-28 Sarmat is a very powerful missile made by Russia. It is the heaviest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in the world, weighing about 208 tonnes and measuring 35.3 meters long. It can travel up to 18,000 kilometers, which means it can hit any place on Earth when launched from its base.

This missile uses liquid fuel and can carry 10 nuclear warheads, each with a very strong blast or 3 very fast Avangard glide weapons. It also has special systems to avoid being stopped by enemy missile defenses. One special feature is its ability to fly over the South Pole using a system called FOBS, which helps it avoid the usual defense systems in the north.

DF-41

China DF-41 is a powerful missile that can travel a very long distance – up to 15,000 km and fly extremely fast, around 25 times the speed of sound. It can carry up to 10 nuclear warheads, each strong enough to cause massive damage, and uses China’s BeiDou satellites to guide it very accurately.

First used in 2017, this solid-fuel missile is controlled by China’s Rocket Force and was shown to the public during a big military parade in 2019. It strengthens China’s defense by making it harder for other countries, like the U.S., to stop its missiles.

LGM-35 Sentinel

The U.S. LGM-35 Sentinel is a new missile that will replace the older Minuteman III by 2030. It is launched from underground silos and uses solid fuel with three stages. It can carry powerful nuclear warheads and travel up to 13,000 km. Built by Northrop Grumman, the project now costs around $140.9 billion. Although delayed, it will help protect the U.S. and keep its land-based nuclear defense strong until the year 2075.

Trident II D5

The Trident II D5 is a powerful missile used by the U.S. and UK. It is launched from submarines and can travel up to 12,000 km at 24 times the speed of sound. It carries up to 8 nuclear warheads, each very powerful and hits targets with about 90-metre accuracy using special guidance systems. It is used on Ohio-class and Vanguard submarines and is an important part of NATO’s nuclear defense, with over 190 successful test launches.

RS-24 Yars

The RS-24 Yars is a powerful Russian missile that can be launched from silos or moved on trucks. It has three solid-fuel stages, travels up to 10,500 km and weighs 49,000 kg. It can carry up to 10 nuclear warheads, each very strong and includes tricks like decoys to avoid enemy missile defenses. It uses both onboard and satellite guidance (GLONASS) to hit targets accurately, around 250 metres close and can change direction in flight to stay safe.

M51

The M51 is France’s main  nuclear missile launched from submarines, used to protect the country at sea. It started service in 2010 and uses solid fuel with three stages. It can travel up to 8,000 km, is 13 metres long and weighs 53,000 kg. Each missile can carry 4 to 6 nuclear warheads, each up to 150 kilotons. It is launched from Triomphant-class submarines and has special guidance and tools to escape enemy defences.

R-29RMU2.1 Layner

The R-29RMU2.1 Layner is a powerful Russian missile launched from submarines. It can travel up to 12,000 km, hitting targets far from Russian waters. This missile can carry up to 12 small nuclear warheads at once, helping it hit many targets or confuse enemy defences. It is used on Delta IV-class submarines and can be located with different warheads depending on the missiles. Its design helps it get past modern missile defense systems for a strong second-strike ability.

LGM-30G Minuteman III

The LGM-30G Minuteman III is a powerful U.S. missile used for land-based nuclear defense since 1970. It is kept in strong underground silos and can be launched quickly if needed. This missile uses solid fuel, has three stages and can fly up to 13,000 kg – enough to reach targets on other continents. It is 18.2 metres long and weighs about 34,467 kg. Though it was first built to carry three warheads, today it usually carries just one strong nuclear warhead, with an explosive power between 300 and 475 kilotons. It uses both internal systems and GPS to guide it very accurately, with an error margin of about 120 meters.

JL-2

The JL-2 is a Chinese missile launched from submarines, giving China strong nuclear power at sea. It can travel about 7,000 to 8,000 km, enough to hit targets in Asia and even parts of the U.S. The JL-2 is used on Type 094 Jin-class submarines, each carrying up to 12 missiles. It runs on solid fuel for quick launch and carries 3 to 4 nuclear warheads. Its guidance uses internal systems and China’s BeiDou satellites for better aim.

Agni-V

Agni-V is India’s powerful long-range missile developed by DRDO to strengthen its nuclear defense. It can travel 7,000 to 8,000 km, reaching most of Asia and parts of Europe. The missile uses three stages with solid fuel and lightweight materials for better performance. It can carry 3 to 6 nuclear warheads now, with future versions able to carry up to 12. Agni-V travels at very high speeds, reaching up to March 24 during its final phase.
