The NIRF Rankings for 2023 have been released, unveiling the top-10 universities in India. These rankings consider various factors such as student strength, intake, placement records, research facilities, financial resources and NAAC certification. The top universities in India encompass a mix of public, private, state, deemed and other institutions. This comprehensive list includes outstanding government and private universities that excel in providing an ideal environment for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, catering to the brightest minds in the country.
The Indian Instituted of Science topped hold the position as the India’s topmost university 2023, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University at second place. Jamia Milia Islamia and Jadavpur University maintain their positions at third and fourth, respectively, from the previous year.
The National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in September 2015 to rank institutions in India based on parameters such as Teaching, Learning, Research, Graduation Outcomes and Perception. The first ranking for the institutions was released in 2016 by NIRF.
As of November 2023, the Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore) topped the list of top-10 universities in India according to the ranking released by NIRF, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Jadavpur University.

IISc, Bangalore tops NIRF 2023 rankings, offering diverse undergraduate and postgraduate programs in fields like aerospace engineering, materials science and product design. B.Sc. (Research) admission relies on KVPY, JEE OR NEET-UG, while GATE scores determine admission to 56 postgraduate programs in areas such as electrical engineering and computer science.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) secured the second position in NIRF 2023 rankings. Renowned in New Delhi, it is esteemed for bachelor’s degrees in foreign languages and integrated B.Sc. to M.Sc. programs via CUET-UG. For enrollment in M.A., M.Sc., postgraduate diploma, advanced diploma, MCA and M.Tech., CUET-PG is a perquisite.
Jamia Milia Islamia, situated in Delhi, is a central university founded in 1920, endorsed by the UGC and holds membership in the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Accredited with an “A” Grade by NAAC, it attains the third position in the University category with a score of 67.73 in the rankings.
Jadavpur University, founded in 1955, is renowned for its program in Technology, Science and Arts. The semi-residential university boasts two campuses, spanning 58 acres in Jadavpur and 26 acres in Salt Lake. Offering courses in Humanities, Science, Engineering and Technology, Jadavpur University secured the fourth position in the University category of NIRF Ranking 2023.
Banaras Hindu University, globally acknowledged, is renowned for its research-focused programs in Humanities and Science. Boasting six advanced study centers, 10 Special Assistance Programme departments and numerous specialized research centers, BHU holds the distinction of being Asia’s largest residential university. The central university’s primary campus spans an extensive 1,300 acres.
Previously named Manipal University, Manipal Academy of Higher Education is a deemed to-be-university situated in Karnataka. It operates campuses in Mangalore and Bangalore, as well as offshore campus focuses on Regenerative Medicine. The Mangalore campus specializes in medical, dental and nursing programs, while the Bangalore campus focuses on Regenerative Medicine.
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, a multi-campus and multi-disciplinary research institution, stands among India’s premier research academies. With six campuses spanning Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, it excels in diverse fields. The university offers a range of courses through various schools and departments, including Allied Health Sciences, Arts & Science, Ayurveda, Biotechnology, Business, Communication, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Medicine, Nanosciences, Nursing, Pharmacy and Social Work.
Vellore Institute of Technology, established in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College, gained university status in 2001 under the UGC Act, 1956. Recognized for its self-financing model, VIT holds the eighth position in the NIRF Rankings 2023.
Aligarh Muslim University, founded in 1920, a government-owned central university, is accredited by NAAC. Offering 193 courses at diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels, AMU’s sprawling 1155-acre campus hosts 26,151 students and 1197 faculty members. In the NIRF Ranking 2023, AMU secures the 9th position overall and the 11th position in the university category.
The University of Hyderabad (UoH) is a distinguished postgraduate teaching and reaching institution in India. It encompasses various schools offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Integrated Studies, Computer and Informative Sciences, Arts & Communication, Humanities, Social Sciences, Economics, Life Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Medical Sciences, Management Studies, Engineering Sciences and Technology and Social Studies.
