Top-5 Largest Jails in the World by 2025

Prisons exist to keep societies safe and to hold people who break the law. But some prisons are so big that they house tens of thousands of inmates, often far beyond their intended capacity. By 2025, several correctional facilities around the world are known for their sheer size, strict security, and overcrowding issues.

Here are the names of top-5 largest jails in the world:

  • New Bilibid Prison
  • Silivri Prison
  • Klong Prem Central Prison
  • Los Angeles Country Jail
  • Tihar Jail

New Bilibid Prison

The New Bilibid Prison (NBP), located in Muntinlupa, Metro Manila, Philippines, is the country’s main prison managed by the Bureau of Corrections under the Department of Justice. Built to hold about 6,345 inmates, it is now severely overcrowded. By October 2022, it housed more than 29,000 prisoners, making it almost five times over its capacity and earning the title of the world’s largest jail.

Silivri Prison

The Marmara Prison, earlier known as Silivri Prison, is located in the Silivri district of Istanbul, Turkey. Opened in 2008, it is a high-security prison complex and is considered Turkey’s most modern correctional facility. With a huge inmate population, it has become Europe’s largest prison and the world’s second-largest jail, making it one of the most significant penal institutions globally.

Klong Prem Central Prison

The Klong Prem Central Prison, located in Chatuchak District, Bangkok, Thailand, is a maximum-security facility and the world’s third-largest jail. It houses up to 20,000 inmates in different sections, including the Women’s Central Prison (Lat Yao), a correctional hospital, and a special prison for drug offenders. Managed by the Thai Department of Corrections, it also holds many foreign prisoners and even includes female death row inmates.

Los Angeles Country Jail

The Los Angeles County Jail, located in California, USA, is the largest prison system in the United States. It holds nearly 20,000 inmates, making it a major correctional hub for the region. The facility has long struggled with overcrowding, gang conflicts, and violence, yet it continues to play a crucial role in America’s prison network due to its huge size and importance.

Tihar Jail

The Tihar Prisons, commonly called Tihar Jail, is the largest prison complex in India, located in West Delhi near Janakpuri. Spread over 400 acres, it has nine central prisons and is managed by the Department of Delhi Prisons. Along with Rohini and Mandoli complexes, it forms Delhi’s prison system. Known for its size and strict security, Tihar also runs rehabilitation and reform programs for inmates.
