Trump Announces Permanent US Security Deal Over Greenland

The new security arrangement between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland has been made public by US President Donald Trump. As part of this security agreement, the US will get permanent rights related to security, access, military bases, and overflights in Greenland. This new security agreement is meant to increase the military presence of the US in Greenland, a territory of strategic significance in the Arctic region, and prevent any kind of base building and investment in Greenland by the adversaries who are not members of NATO. This agreement does not mean that Greenland is handed over to the US.

What is Stated in the Greenland Deal?

Trump announced the deal on September 18, 2026, saying that the deal was something without any expiry date. According to him, the United States would be able to do whatever it wants to protect the Greenland area along with its own security interests.

Reuters says that the deal gives the United States the right of permanent access, basing, and overflight in Greenland. The deal would also ensure that non-NATO nations could not have any kind of military base in Greenland.

Why Is Greenland of Strategic Importance?

Greenland possesses a strategic location in the Arctic and North Atlantic, positioning itself between North America and Europe.

The island is also strategically vital for military surveillance, access by air and sea routes, and Arctic security in general. Military installations of the United States already exist in Greenland, such as the Pituffik Space Base in the northwest.

Thus, the new agreement is meant to enhance the security presence of the United States and its allies in the Arctic region without giving other countries an opportunity to create their military bases there.

What Did Denmark Say?

Denmark’s prime minister Mette Frederiksen stated that the agreement would increase common security in the Arctic and North Atlantic and would be good for both NATO and Europe.

Crucially, the Danish government stated that the agreement will take into account the sovereignity and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as the right to self-determination of the people of Greenland.

Greenland is an autonomous country in the Kingdom of Denmark and has its own government. The issue of Greenland’s future is inseparably linked to the principle of self-determination.

What Did Marco Rubio Say?

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed that the agreement would solve all of Washington’s national security issues related to Greenland.

The US government’s stance on Greenland is to keep it in the strategic defensive area of North America and not let adversarial states build any military and strategic bases on the island.

What Will Happen Next?

The Danish Government announced that United States, Denmark, and Greenland are set to sign the agreement in the upcoming United Nations General Assembly. Post signing, it has to be ratified via the domestic parliamentary process.
