Tushar Mehta Reappointed as Solicitor General of India for Three Years
The Union Government has reappointed the senior advocate Tushar Mehta as the Solicitor General of India for a new fresh term of the three years and reaffirmed the confidence in him. This decision was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and will take effect from the 1st of July, 2026.
According to the fresh order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Tushar Mehta’s reappointment on June 20th, 2026.
He will continue to serve as the Solicitor General of India for another three-year term which will begin from July 1, 2026, or until further orders whichever is the earlier.
The decision showcases the government’s intent to maintain the stability in its legal team and particularly as the several significant legal and constitutional issues remain under judicial consideration.
Tushar Mehta is the senior advocate who hails from the Gujarat and he is widely regarded as India’s one of the leading legal practitioners.
Before becoming a Solicitor General, Mehta served in the various legal capacities which includes the representing government institutions in the important cases.
His experience in the constitutional law, public policy matters and high-profile litigation has contributed to his appointment as the India’s second-highest law officer.
Over the period of years, he has appeared before the Supreme Court and several High Courts in cases which involving the constitutional interpretation, governance, national security, taxation and public administration.
The Solicitor General of India is the second-highest law officer of the country after the Attorney General of the India.
This office plays the crucial role in representing the Union Government before the Supreme Court, High Courts, tribunals and other judicial forums.

Tushar Mehta was first appointed as the Solicitor General of India on October 10, 2018.
Since then, he has played the key role in representing the government in multiple landmark legal matters before the Supreme Court and other courts across the country.
In the month of July 2023, he received his first three-year extension. With the latest decision, he will continue in office until at least 2029 with subject to government orders.
