Typhoon Talim Disrupts Hong Kong

Talim made landfall in Zhanjiang city, located in Guangdong province. China typically experiences its primary flood season from late July to early August. During this period, there is an upsurge in tropical cyclone and typhoon activity, particularly in the South China Sea and Western Pacific regions, with particular emphasis on the southern and southeastern coastal areas of the country. Hong Kong hoisted the Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No 8,the third-highest warning level first time this year.

Typhoon Talim Triggers Disaster Mitigation Measures in Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Southern China

  • The South China Sea witnessed the origin of Typhoon Talim, causing Hong Kong, Vietnam, and southern China to activate their disaster mitigation measures.
  • The grounding of flights and temporary halt of trade in Hong Kong’s markets were implemented in which the evacuation of over 1,000 people took place.
  • In response to Typhoon Talim, the Hong Kong Observatory issued a storm signal, leading to the adjournment of all court hearings in the city.
  • Zhuhai Jinwan Airport in Guangdong canceled 43 inbound and 36 outbound flights, while Meilan International Airport in Haikou, the capital city of Hainan, and Qionghai Boao Airport on the resort island also canceled all flights.
  • In Haikou city, classes, work, flights, park activities, and business operations were suspended starting with residents required to stay home, Emergency shelters were also made available to the public.
  • Government departments in coastal cities and counties have been asked to call all vessels to return to ports to avoid the wind, maintain and reinforce aquaculture facilities and aquaculture fishing rafts, strengthen the inspection of coastal seawalls, locks and other facilities in a timely manner.
