U.S. and Britain Forge Alliance to Enhance AI Safety
The United States and Britain have joined forces to bolster the safety measures surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) amidst concerns over upcoming advanced AI iterations. This collaboration, formalized through a memorandum of understanding, aims to collectively develop advanced AI model testing procedures, aligning with commitments made during the AI Safety Summit held at Bletchley Park.
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and British Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan signed the memorandum of understanding in Washington, highlighting the significance of addressing AI risks for national security and societal well-being. Both countries have established government-led AI safety institutes, with plans for joint testing exercises and potential personnel exchanges.
In a joint interview, Raimondo and Donelan emphasized the urgency of addressing AI risks, particularly with the imminent release of more capable AI models. Their focus lies on specialized areas of concern, necessitating immediate action to mitigate potential threats posed by generative AI.
The partnership extends beyond bilateral cooperation, as both nations aim to establish similar collaborations with other countries to promote AI safety globally. Key information on AI capabilities and risks will be shared, alongside technical research on AI safety and security.
Both the U.S. and Britain have implemented policy measures and made significant investments to address AI risks. The Biden administration, through executive orders and proposed regulations, seeks to reduce AI-related risks, while Britain has allocated substantial funds for research hubs and regulatory training.
Raimondo highlighted concerns regarding the potential misuse of AI, particularly in scenarios such as bioterrorism or nuclear war simulations. Efforts are directed towards preventing the utilization of AI models for catastrophic purposes, underscoring the necessity for stringent safeguards.
