The UNDP Full Form

UNDP stands for the United Nations Development Programme and its vision is to create a world where no one is left behind. Established in 1965, UNDP operates under the auspices of the United Nations and is headquartered in New York City. The organization is led by an administrator who oversees a 36-member Executive Board comprising both developing and developed countries.

Funding and Member States

UNDP operates with funds entirely sponsored by member countries of the United Nations. Its extensive network encompasses 177 countries, where it collaborates with local and national governments to implement Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As of 2018, UNDP has generated $5.5 billion in revenue from its activities worldwide.

Organizational Focus

UNDP’s mission aligns with its Nextgen initiative, which builds upon its existing practices with the intention of securing a sustainable and prosperous future. This initiative concentrates on helping countries respond to rapidly changing landscapes, emphasizing four indispensable aspects: Think, Invest, Manage and Deliver.

  1. Think: UNDP accelerates its efforts towards the achievement of SDGs by redesigning the Human Development Report and utilizing data to combat poverty.
  2. Invest: The organization annually allocates nearly $5 billion to finance its operations and encourages more investors to contribute to its noble cause.
  3. Manage: UNDP focuses on creating a healthy and creative work environment to increase efficiency and trains the workforce to be more efficient, effective and innovative.
  4. Deliver: It connects 17,000 employees in 50 countries to provide integrated solutions that reduce breakdown losses and associated costs.

Three Developmental Settings

UNDP recognizes that countries require three types of support to overcome obstacles and move closer to achieving SDGs:

  1. Eradicating Poverty in all Forms and Dimensions: UNDP focuses on addressing interconnected financial, ecological and administrative challenges that drive individuals into poverty or make them vulnerable to falling into it. This requires a rapid pace of progress that is binding at various levels of government.
  2. Accelerating Structural Transformations for Sustainable Development: By addressing disparities and exclusion, UNDP helps nations quicken essential changes, enabling them to respond to global megatrends, such as globalization, urbanization, technological, advancements and demographic shifts.
