16th Urban Mobility India Conference & Exhibition 2023: Key Points and Initiatives

1. Expansion of Metro Network:

  • The operational length of India’s metro system stands at 895 km, making it the third largest in the world.
  • India is on the trajectory to becoming the world’s second-largest metro network in the next few years.

2. Focus on E-Mobility:

  • The government is actively working towards implementing e-mobility solutions.
  • Plans are underway to introduce ten thousand electric buses, marking a significant step towards sustainable urban transportation.

3. Integrated and Resilient Urban Transport:

  • The conference theme, “Integrated and Resilient Urban Transport,” underscores the importance of designing efficient and high-quality transport systems that can withstand challenges, including rapid climate change.
  • The focus is on integrating various transport options, enhancing resilience from the planning stage itself.

4. Government Initiatives:

  • Government initiatives like FAME-I (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) and FAME-II have paved the way for transformative changes in urban transportation.
  • The PM-eBus Seva Scheme, designed to augment city bus operations, prioritizes cities lacking organized bus services.
  • Under this scheme, 10,000 e-buses will be deployed on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model across 169 cities. This deployment includes support for associated infrastructure, bus depots, and behind-the-meter power infrastructure.
  • Environment-friendly measures like bus priority infrastructure, multimodal interchange facilities, National Common Mobility Card (NCMC)-based Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS), and charging infrastructure are integral parts of the Green Urban Mobility Initiatives (GUMI).
