Union Minister Shri Anurag Singh Thakur Launches 17th Film Bazaar At IFFI, Goa

 

The Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Youth Affairs & Sports, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, inaugurated the Film Bazaar, the largest South Asian film market at Marriott Resort, Goa. The film bazaar is a bustling marketplace of ideas, a haven for filmmakers, producers, and storytellers from around the world. It is described as a confluence of creativity and commerce, where ideas and inspirations form the foundation of a thriving cinematic marketplace.

India’s Media & Entertainment Industry: A Global Powerhouse

  • Shri Anurag Singh Thakur highlighted the robust growth of the Indian media & entertainment industry, boasting an annual growth rate of 20%.
  • It is recognized as the fifth-largest and most globalized industry globally.
  • The Film Bazaar, now in its 17th year, has become an integral part of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), growing into one of Asia’s premier film markets.

Diverse Film Selection: A Tapestry of Themes

  • The minister emphasized the diverse selection of films for this year’s Film Bazaar, covering fiction, docu-shorts, documentaries, horror films, and even an animated film.
  • These films explore universal themes such as diaspora, patriarchy, urban angst, extreme poverty, climate crisis, nationalism, sports, and fitness.

Co-Production Market: Exploring Life in 17 Languages

  • Shri Thakur proudly announced the Co-Production Market, featuring twelve documentaries from seven countries, delving into life in 17 different languages.
  • This market offers a journey into the heart of reality through the lens of filmmakers.
  • Additionally, the Viewing Room, a video library platform, showcases 190 submissions, some of which will be selected for the prestigious Film Bazaar Recommends.

Embracing Innovation: “Book to Box Office”

  • In a nod to innovation and the Prime Minister’s call for ease of doing business, a new component, “Book to Box Office,” has been introduced.
  • This segment will showcase 59 submissions seamlessly making the transition from books to screens, highlighting the dynamic relationship between literature and cinema.

VFX & Tech Pavilion: Exploring Storytelling Possibilities

  • This year, the Film Bazaar introduces a newly curated “VFX & Tech Pavilion” to make filmmakers aware of the latest innovations.
  • It encourages exploration of storytelling possibilities not just through traditional cinematography but also by “creating the shot.”

The 10 Recommended Films: A Panorama of Genres

  • The Film Bazaar will showcase 10 recommended films spanning various genres, including documentary, horror, climate crisis, and fiction.
  • These films are presented in English, Hindi, Bengali, Marwari, Kannada, and Maori (New Zealand language).

Pitching to the World: Co-Production Market Highlights

  • The event features the official selection of feature-length projects from the Co-Production Market, representing India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, USA, UK, Singapore, Germany, France, Poland, Luxembourg, and Israel.
  • Selected filmmakers will have the opportunity to pitch their projects to international and Indian producers, distributors, festival programmers, financiers, and sales agents.

NFDC’s Vision: Connecting Local Filmmakers Globally

  • Initiated by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), the Film Bazaar has evolved into South Asia’s largest film market.
  • It plays a pivotal role in connecting local filmmakers with global producers and distributors, fostering collaboration and the exchange of creative ideas on an international scale.
