Union Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur Hands Over Chess Olympiad Torch to Budapest

Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur handed over the Chess Olympiad Torch to Budapest, Hungary, the host city for the 45th edition of the Chess Olympiad. The ceremony, held at the Major Dhyanchand National Stadium in New Delhi, was not just a formal handover but also a celebration of chess as an intellectual sport deeply rooted in India’s heritage.

A Friendly Game Amongst Chess Titans

The ceremony was highlighted by a friendly game of chess, symbolizing the spirit of camaraderie and competition that the Chess Olympiad embodies. Indian Grand Master Vishwanathan Anand, a name synonymous with chess in India, and Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur teamed up against FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich and Hungarian Grand Master Judit Polgár. This friendly match set the stage for the torch handover, underscoring the global nature of the sport and its ability to bring together individuals from across the world.

The 44th Chess Olympiad, held in Chennai in 2022, was a testament to the global appeal and competitive spirit of chess, with more than 2500 players and 7000 participants from around the world. The success of this event paved the way for the upcoming edition in Budapest, promising an even greater celebration of chess as a sport and cultural phenomenon.

The Inaugural Chess Olympiad Torch Relay

The first Chess Olympiad Torch Relay was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Stadium on 19th June 2022, marking a historic moment in the annals of chess. This initiative not only honored India’s contribution to the game but also symbolized the unity and peace that chess promotes among nations and cultures.

Budapest Awaits

As the torch moves to Budapest, Hungary, for the 45th Chess Olympiad, the chess community and enthusiasts around the world look forward to another spectacular event that celebrates intellectual prowess and international friendship.
