US-Iran Peace Talks in Islamabad Collapse Without Agreement, Deepening Regional Uncertainty

The major global political setback comes as the peace talks between the United States and Iran have failed to produce the any agreement the during high level negotiations which were held in the Islamabad. This talks was mediated by Pakistan and it aims to de-escalate the ongoing tensions in the Middle East but it was ended without consensus as the both sides were blaming each other. The collapse of this negotiations has raised the global concerns around the world.

Mr. Vance said that the Islamabad Talks with Iran failed as the two sides could not bridge the gulf of differences despite efforts spreading more than 21 hours.

Ghalibaf, who led the Iranian delegation for the Pakistani mediated talks with the US in Islamabad, added that his country’s delegation negotiated in good faith and raised “forward-looking initiatives” without specifying what these were.

Key Reasons Behind Failure of Talks

The failure of negotiations comes from the deep-rooted disagreements between the two nations.

According to officials the major sticking points includes the,

  • Iran’s nuclear program
  • To control and navigation rights in the Strait of Hormuz, West Asia
  • Also the lack of mutual trust between the two delegations

The Iranian leadership have stated that the US failed to build the trust and on the other side US has accused the Iran for the non-cooperation which indicates the fragile talks between the parties.

The main focus of the crisis is the strategically important Strait of Hormuz in which through nearly the one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes.

As the Iran has claimed that the strait is ‘completely under its control’ while also imposing the strict restrictions on maritime traffic.

  • Limited passage for selected vessels of some countries after permisssion
  • Mainly the threats to ships which are not complying with Iranian conditions
