US Launches Operation Economic Outcast Against Iran

The US government has unveiled an operation called Economic Outcast, which is a new global campaign to pressure Iran economically. This campaign is expected to ensure that Iran’s economic networks are cut off from all the means through which it earns its revenues. This decision by the US has been made known by the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on August 24. The significance of this decision is that it will be applied globally.

What Is Operation Economic Outcast?

Operation Economic Outcast is an American-led effort aimed at cutting off the Iranian economy’s supply lines globally. Per Bessent, this campaign aims at reducing the sources of revenue for the Iranian regime.

The US has issued a threat of secondary sanctions against any foreign businesses or nations that participate in business dealings with the economic networks of Iran. Thus, this campaign will extend beyond the US-Iran relations and affect the international businesses dealing with Iran.

Five Most Important Sectors Targeted

The sanctions campaign will target five sectors that have been highlighted by US officials as essential for the functioning of Iran’s economic system,

  1. Digital assets
  2. Technology
  3. Gold
  4. Aviation
  5. Shipping

Iranian oil revenues are still an important target of this campaign. The US has tried to disrupt the transactions and networks converting oil revenues into money and increasing pressure on firms conducting these transactions.

The US Treasury Department has imposed fresh sanctions on 60 entities, ships, and individuals across different countries including UAE, Hong Kong, China, Singapore and Switzerland.

Why Is the Campaign Important?

It takes place against the background of rising hostilities between the United States and Iran. The former seeks to put pressure on the latter and get significant concessions from it in terms of its nuclear program and activities in the region.

Bessent called the operation “economic D-day”, referring to the way how it can be regarded as an escalation in the policy of the US. At the same time, Iran does not pay attention to new pressure, stating that sanctions will not change anything.

Global Economic Repercussions

Secondary sanctions may attract close attention since they can put companies and institutions all over the world in the face of a dilemma. It may be necessary for businesses cooperating with Iran-related networks to evaluate their vulnerability to sanctions from the United States.

Moreover, the campaign may have an effect on the world energy markets, shipping lines and other trade relations as the Strait of Hormuz remains under threat.
