Dr Vece Paes, a celebrated figure in Indian sports and a bronze medallist at the 1972 Munich Olympics, passed away on Thursday at the age of 80. A multi-faceted personality, he was not only a former Indian hockey team midfielder but also a sports medicine doctor, administrator, and mentor. He leaves behind a rich legacy, both in sports and in his son, Leander Paes, India’s legendary tennis star.

A Decorated Hockey Career

Vece Paes rose to prominence as a midfielder in the Indian hockey team that clinched a bronze medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics. His calm demeanor, strategic gameplay, and commitment on the field earned him admiration from teammates and fans alike. His contribution played a pivotal role during one of India’s proud moments in international hockey.

Beyond the Field: A Multi-Sport Enthusiast

Additionally, he served as President of the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club, one of the oldest sports clubs in India.

Vece Paes’ influence extended into the next generation of Indian sports through his son, Leander Paes, who won a bronze medal in tennis at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and holds 15 Grand Slam titles.
