Vece Paes, Olympic Hockey Medallist and Sports Administrator, Passes Away at 80
Dr Vece Paes, a celebrated figure in Indian sports and a bronze medallist at the 1972 Munich Olympics, passed away on Thursday at the age of 80. A multi-faceted personality, he was not only a former Indian hockey team midfielder but also a sports medicine doctor, administrator, and mentor. He leaves behind a rich legacy, both in sports and in his son, Leander Paes, India’s legendary tennis star.
Vece Paes rose to prominence as a midfielder in the Indian hockey team that clinched a bronze medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics. His calm demeanor, strategic gameplay, and commitment on the field earned him admiration from teammates and fans alike. His contribution played a pivotal role during one of India’s proud moments in international hockey.
Even after retiring from professional hockey, Paes continued his involvement in sports. A true all-rounder, he actively participated in various other sports like football, cricket, and rugby. Between 1996 and 2002, he served as the President of the Indian Rugby Football Union, promoting the growth and structure of rugby in India.
Dr Paes was equally distinguished in the field of sports medicine. He worked as a medical consultant with key sports bodies such as the Asian Cricket Council and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He played an essential role in anti-doping education programmes, helping establish ethical standards in Indian sports. Additionally, he served as President of the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club, one of the oldest sports clubs in India.
Vece Paes’ influence extended into the next generation of Indian sports through his son, Leander Paes, who won a bronze medal in tennis at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and holds 15 Grand Slam titles. Their bond, visible in public celebrations and personal milestones, symbolized the fusion of sporting greatness and family strength.
