Veteran Congress Leader and Former Union Minister Mohsina Kidwai Passes Away at 94

Mohsina Kidwai breathed her last at Metro Hospital in Noida early Wednesday morning. She had been suffering from age-related heath issues for some time. Her family confirmed the news, bringing an end to a remarkable life in politics.

A Political Career Spanning Six Decades

Mohsina Kidwai served the nation for more than 60 years. She was one of the most experienced leaders in the Congress party and remained active in public life for many years. Her long journey made her a well-known and respected figure in Indian politics.

Key Roles in Government

During her career, she held several important positions in the Union government. She worked in ministries like labour, health and family welfare, rural development, transport and urban development. She earned the trust of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi during her time as a minister.

Journey from State to National Politics

Her political journey began in 1960 when she was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council at just 28 years old. Later, she became a minister in the state government. She entered national politics after winning a by-election from Azamgarh in 1978.

Rare Achievement in Legislatures

Mohsina Kidwai achieved something very rare in Indian politics. She served in four different legislative bodies – the Legislative Council, Legislative Assembly, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. This shows her wide experience and strong  presence in public life.

Active Role in Congress Party

She was a senior leader in the Congress party and played an important role in decision-making. She was also part of key committees like the Congress Working Committee and the Central Election Committee. She guided the party during many challenges times.

Many top Congress leaders expressed sadness over her passing. Mallikarjun Kharge called her a dedicated leader whose loss is huge for the country. Rahul Gandhi praised her simple and inspiring life, especially for women. Priyanka Gandhi said the party would deeply miss her guidance. Shashi Tharoor described her as a great leader who represented a respectful and loyal era of politics.

Life Beyond Politics

Even in her later years, she remained active and connected with public life. In 2022, she wrote her memoir titled My Life in Indian Politics, where she shared her experiences and journey in simple words.
