Veteran Congress Leader Vasantrao Chavan Passes Away at 70
Veteran Congress leader and recently elected Nanded MP, Vasantrao Chavan, passed away at 4 a.m. on August 26, 2024, at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad. Chavan, who was 70 years old, had been battling a prolonged illness and had been undergoing treatment for renal issues. His condition deteriorated suddenly, leading to his demise.
Chavan, who recently won the Nanded Lok Sabha seat despite significant challenges, had a distinguished political career. He managed to secure victory against BJP’s Pratap Patil Chikhalikar by 59,442 votes, despite health problems and a weakened party due to key defections, including that of former CM Ashok Chavan to the BJP. Vasant Chavan expressed gratitude to Ashok Chavan for his departure, which, he felt, contributed to his victory.
Born in Naigaon, Nanded district, Vasant Chavan’s political journey included roles as a gram panchayat member, zilla parishad member, and member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. He served as an MLA from Naigaon from 2009 to 2014 and was also the chairman of the Nanded District Central Cooperative Bank from 2021 to 2023.
Significant Achievement: Won the Nanded Lok Sabha seat in 2024 despite health challenges and significant defections in the party.
Final Rites: Scheduled to be held in Naigaon at 11 a.m.
